Biography
Hi there! My name is Ciara and I am a final year Fine Art Painting student in the National College of Art and Design. Since coming to NCAD in 2018, my work, my thought processes and my confidence as an artist have escalated entirely. At the beginning of final year I started my last project as a NCAD Painting student. I've always had a deep love and admiration for Ancient Greek Mythology which grew from a very young age. Now looking back at them, I began to dissect the hidden meanings behind some of their greatest legends. My focal point were the famous women in Greek Myth such as Persephone, Hera, Medusa etc., who were abused, blamed and demonized by the men in their stories. Victim blaming was extremely evident in these tales and the actions that took place all this time ago still exist today in the 21st century. Through my research I explored the topics of violence against women, stereotyping, identity loss and the demonisation of mental health issues women can face. The abuse women face has been normalised for centuries and I hope to bring some comfort to the women whose voices have been silenced by society.
